How We Review

Our methodology for product assessments and recommendations.

Home Brief publishes three types of product content: first-hand reviews (where we have assessed the product directly), expert-informed roundups (where our selection is informed by category expertise and verified specifications), and curated shortlists (where we apply consistent criteria to available market options). Each type is clearly labelled in the article.

Review types

First-hand reviews

We assess the product directly — either through a home trial, showroom visit or controlled assessment environment. These reviews include our direct observations, where relevant testing methodology, and our honest verdict. Products may be purchased by us, borrowed for assessment or provided by the manufacturer; the source is disclosed in the article.

Expert-informed roundups

For categories where first-hand testing is not practical across the full shortlist, we apply category expertise alongside manufacturer specifications, verified customer feedback patterns and retailer quality assurances. The basis of assessment is disclosed in the review methodology box at the top of the article.

Curated shortlists

Buying guides and best-of lists are based on criteria-led selection from available market options. We research the category, define selection criteria, apply them consistently and disclose the basis of inclusion. Affiliate relationships do not change which products are included.

Category-level criteria

Category Primary criteria
Sofas and seating Frame construction, fabric quality and composition, cushion fill and density, comfort across body types, ease of cleaning, delivery and returns
Lighting Build quality, shade material, bulb compatibility, cord quality, ease of installation, value for design quality
Rugs Pile construction, fibre type, backing material, durability, shedding risk, suitability for stated use case
Bedding and soft furnishings Fabric thread count or GSM, fill power where relevant, washing performance, shrinkage, value per wash
Storage and shelving Material quality, load capacity, ease of assembly, finish durability, value for quality
Ceramics and decor accessories Craft quality, material integrity, colour authenticity vs photography, value for craft

Independence

Product placement in our reviews and roundups is not for sale. Brands cannot pay to be included, removed or ranked higher. Where products are provided free for assessment, this is disclosed. Affiliate relationships are disclosed separately.

Updates and accuracy

Buying guides are reviewed and updated when prices change significantly, products are discontinued or new market entrants materially change the recommendations. Articles carry a "Last reviewed" date. If you have found an error or an outdated recommendation, please contact corrections@athomebrief.com.
